Scholarship Spotlight: Christina Fenwick
Christina Fenwick was destined for a career in real estate. Growing up, the Kansas City native and her siblings routinely tagged along with their father (a residential construction lender) looking at new residential developments and construction projects in the area. Years later Christina earned an undergraduate degree in management with a minor in real estate from Missouri State University in Springfield and by summer of 2017, she expects to have completed a Master of Science in Entrepreneurial Real Estate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Lewis White Real Estate Center, which is part of the Henry W. Bloch School of Management at UMKC.
The 27-year-old has been awarded the $2,500 Mary Riley-Cheek Memorial Scholarship from the SIOR Western Missouri/Kansas Chapter that was matched by the SIOR Foundation. The $5000 scholarship will help her complete and finance the two-year, $18,000 master’s degree program, where she is enhancing her knowledge of commercial properties, investment theories and strategies, market analysis and contract negotiations.
Christina already has a considerable amount of real estate experience. During her undergraduate studies she completed a nine-month internship with Midland Loan Services, a business unit of PNC Bank. Since 2013 she has worked full-time at Q10 Triad Capital Advisors, a national umbrella network of commercial mortgage bankers that supports office, industrial, retail, multifamily and specialty real estate investors and developers. As a loan analyst, Christina facilitates the underwriting process on commercial real estate loans, most of which are funded by life insurance companies.
To accelerate and expand her career and create new opportunities, however, she wanted greater expertise in the commercial real estate field and is pursuing her graduate degree with the assistance of the SIOR Foundation.
“Commercial real estate is such an interesting field because it involves so many industries within the broader field of real estate, such as finance, construction and property management, to name a few. After graduation, I would like to make the shift from the analyst desk toward loan origination and production and someday explore working for a real estate development company,” she said.
