Get to Know the CEO

Jim Hirt, MBA, CAE

We sat down with new SIOR Chief Executive Officer Jim Hirt, MBA, CAE, to ask him some very important questions about work and life, and to find out a little bit more about who Jim Hirt the man really is.

Who is Jim Hirt?
A husband, father of two boys, John (21) and Dylan (17), and an association executive for over the past 22 years.

What does SIOR mean to you?
An organization made up of the most prestigious commercial realtor professionals in the world with a mission of offering the highest quality and most recognized professional designation.

What are your goals for the first year?
To build upon the current strategic goals set by the SIOR leadership and develop new goals allowing SIOR to grow and offer new benefits to our members.

What about SIOR is most exciting to you
The strong leadership, staff, and the volunteer members who all have demonstrated a strong desire to make SIOR the best it can be. I’m excited to be able to work with, and lead, such a dedicated group of individuals.

How would you describe what you do for a living to a child?
I would say that I help people so they can do their jobs better ̶ kind of like a school principal.

What is your favorite thing about your career?
The people I get to meet and the relationships I have developed with others from around the world. My career has allowed me to travel and meet people of all nationalities. I have been fortunate and blessed to visit many countries and see first hand the different cultures and the way business is conducted in various countries.

What is your greatest accomplishment?
Being a father to my sons and teaching them to be kind, responsible young men.

What is your favorite game or sport to watch or play?
Well I love all sports and when I was younger I played football, baseball, and basketball. For fourteen years now I’ve been a Washington Redskins season ticket holder. So, going to tailgate with friends and watching the Redskins play would have to be my favorite sporting thing to do.

If you could take credit for any one great piece of art, song, book, or film, which one would you claim and why?
That’s a tough question because there are so many great pieces of work that I wish I could claim. But the first that came to mind was the Mona Lisa. I have been fortunate to see it and when I did I wanted to just stare at it for hours. I suppose if something attracts you that much, it definitely must mean it touched you.

If you could choose to do anything for a day, what would you do?
Another great question. Besides spending the day with my family and going to a Redskins game, I suppose it would be visiting wineries.

Would you rather ride a bike, ride a horse, or ride in a car?
I enjoy all three, but I would choose riding in a car. I like to experience as much as I can in life and I think taking a car ride would allow me to see and experience more in a shorter period of time.

If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I enjoy all kinds of foods, so this is a tough question. Perhaps sushi ranks right up there at the top.

Do you consider Monopoly a game to be played with friends or enemies?
Friends. When I play a game, I prefer to be around family and friends. It gives me the greatest amount of enjoyment.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?
I often tell people they must visit Washington D.C. at least once in their life. So much of our nation’s history is here to see and you should all try and see some of it at least once in your life.

Where is the most interesting place you’ve been?
As I mentioned, I have traveled extensively. The most interesting place may be the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia. Again, it’s because of the history and everything that has occurred there.

What song would we hear if we hooked up your ‘Recently Played’ list on office speakers?
Probably something from U2. I once met Bono and have always enjoyed their music no matter what kind of mood I’m in.

If you could turn any activity into an Olympic sport, what would you have a good chance at winning a medal for?

What’s your favorite drink? (a very important question to our members!)
Scotch and wine are too close to call.

Tea or Coffee?
Coffee. Specifically, Café latte.

What do you do in your free time?
I have spent a lot of my free time watching my boys play their sports. I also enjoy golfing, traveling, watching movies, sports, and working outside around my house.
